A 16 strong Dolphin team signed off the British Swimming Masters and Senior Age Group Championships at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this weekend with an impressive haul of 22 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals – all from just 72 swims.
Making her competitive debut for Dolphin, having recently made the switch from top level Triathlon, 33 year old Sharna King scooped bronze in the first event of the contest, the 1500m freestyle. The Milton Road club went on to claim a further 12 medals on the first day with Chris Jones breaking a masters world record in the 25-29 years age group, 200m breaststroke, in a time of 2:18.17.
The second day of the long course competition witnessed the 100-119 years 4x50m mixed freestyle relay quartet of Andi Manley, Chris Jones, Claire Hayes and King make an assault on the British record – their superb performance saw them go one better and smash the European record too in a time of 1:46.54. Another highlight amongst the many fine swims was provided by 39 years old, Paul Kirk, when he broke through the 60 second barrier in the 100m freestyle in a time of 58.64 seconds.
The Coupar Trophy top team award went to Otter with Dolphin trailing just behind the London based club – though with their sights firmly set on bringing the trophy back to Swindon next year.
