Codling Stars for Sx3 in Regional Sprints

Location: Gloucester GL1 Leisure Centre (25m)
Event: 2008 South West Regional Sprints
Date: Sunday, 29 June 2008

Thomas Codling (10 years)

Thomas Codling was the most successful Swindon Swim Squad (Sx3) swimmer at the Regional Sprint competition, held at the GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester on Sunday, finishing runner up in the Boys’ 10 year old group. The squad of mostly BAGCAT youngsters accumulated 8 top three finishes in the individual events, with all swimmers achieving one or more personal best times. This extremely well run meet attracts entries for the entire South West region, with competitors swimming 50m races in all strokes, along with a 100m individual medley. Although more relaxed than the Regional Championships, it is no less competitive.

Sx3’s best placed swimmers clocked up personal best times in all swims and top three finishes in individual events. Codling achieved third place in the backstroke, and went one better in the breaststroke, making him the only Sx3 swimmer with 2 top three finishes. Joe Kerslake finished third in the backstroke on his way to fourth place in the overall Boys’ 14 year old competition, finishing agonisingly close to third, just seven points behind the bronze medal winner.

In the Boys’ 13 year old group Liam Tubb smashed his previous best time in the 50m fly to finish third in the event, and sixth in the overall contest for his age, which was won by Swindon Dolphin swimmer Tom Iles, who was representing Millfield School at this meet. Other swimmers with top three finishes in individual events were Jack Janicki and Megan Jones in their respective backstrokes, Charlotte Gardo in the fly, and Georgina Mason in the freestyle.

The good displays weren’t only confined to those with high placed finishes. Lauren Matthews and Victoria Jennings continued their excellent recent form with lifetime bests in every swim, Beth Preston’s highlight was an impressive fly swim which resulted in nearly two seconds off her previous best time, and Maddie Easter again demonstrated her potential with a top ten finish in her age group.
