Last weekend saw a team of Dolphin Masters swimmers head north to Sheffield to compete in the 2008 Masters and Senior Age Group Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
Not content with just competing at the National Championships as the reigning 30-34 years 100m World Record holder, Andi Manley was out to add to his collection of titles. His first target was the 50m freestyle which the 30 year old swam in an incredible 22.68 seconds to match Austyn Shortman’s World Record set in 2003. Later in the 100m freestyle and before an attentive and packed poolside, Manley destroyed his own record, touching home in 50.08s. However, finishing just over the magic 50 second mark was not enough and in the 200m freestyle the following day, the Dolphin Chief Coach split 49.97s on the first 100m to lower the World standard even further. Manley also added a 100m IM British record to his growing list of honours.
Andi Manley – 50m and 100m Freestyle Masters World Record Holder
In the medal stakes, Nigel Masters was top Dolphin with a clean sweep of golds in the three breaststroke events and a bronze in the 100m IM. Jon Audis could only manage two golds (200m fly and 100m IM) out of five swims having come up against some stiff opposition in the 200m IM, 100m fly and his favoured 100m backstroke in which he had to settle for silver. Other gold medallists were Kath Baker (200m Brs), Louise Maynard (100m Brs), Doug Alexander (200m Fly) and Sharna King (200m Frs).
There was also some good relay success with the men’s 120+ team of Manley, Masters, Audis and Chris Jones breaking British records in both the medley and freestyle events.
Swindon Dolphin finished 6th in the overall medal table with Spencer Swim Team heading the table.
