Event: Bristol & West Water Polo Division 1
Venue: Milton Road, Swindon
Date: 22nd April 2010
Swindon Dolphin were back to winning ways in the Bristol & West league after claiming victory against Frome on Thursday. Travelling to the fixture with the bare minimum of seven players made the victory even more impressive as Frome had their strongest squad available.
Swindon started the fixture well but were still losing at the end of the first period by a single goal. This was a fine result as Swindon was attacking the shallow end which is always a tough task.
The second quarter was where Swindon took control of the game; defeating Frome by six goals to two and opening up a three goal lead. The winning of individual quarters continued in the third period with Dolphin winning by one to extend the lead to four goals. Frome fought back well in the final period, but the seven Dolphin men managed to hold on to win 13 goals to 11.
Goals were spread throughout the team. Contributions came from Michal Trzeciak and Andy Hicks (4), Chris Selby and Ian Brewer (2) and one from Matt James.
Captain Andy Hicks said after the match “We always knew this match was ours to lose despite only having the seven players available. We started well and ensured that we were still in the game at the end of the first period. We said if we performed well in defence then this would be the spring board to victory – that proved to be the case”.
Dolphin are in action again next Thursday when they take on the current Bristol & West division one champions Cheltenham.
Result: Frome 11 – 13 Swindon Dolphin
Team: Andy Watts, Chris Selby (2 goals, 1 major), Andy Hicks (4 goals), Ian Brewer (2 goals), Matt James (1 goal), Mark Lawlor, Michal Trzeciak (4 goals).
