Event: Bristol & West Water Polo Division 1
Teams: Bristol Central II v Swindon Dolphin
Venue: Bristol University Pool
Date: 17th September 2010
Swindon Dolphin came away with a well earned point after a close encounter in what was their last fixture before kicking off their 2010 Water Polo National League campaign.
The game was a close run affair throughout although Central started much stronger. The first period finished with Dolphin trailing by three goals with the score at five goals to two. The team received a good “ear bashing” from Coach David Quinlivan and Captain Andy Hicks following a poor first quarter which appeared to work and a much improved performance followed. Swindon was a totally different side in the second period and won by six goals turning the three goal deficit into a three goal advantage. It was very much nip and tuck from there on in with Bristol winning the third period leaving just one goal in it going in to the final quarter.
Again the quarter was even with both sides missing good opportunities although Central managed to take a few chances to turn the match on its head again. Swindon came back and managed to equalise with 2 minutes on the clock. Despite a number of time outs taken neither side was able to take the win and the game ended with the fairest result; a draw at 14 goals each.
Goals on the night came from Ian Brewer and Michal Trzeciak (4), Andy Hicks and Chris Selby (2), Matt James and David Quinlivan (1).
David Quinlivan said after the match “We looked really rusty in the first period. We certainly were playing far too frantically and openly. In the second period we controlled the game for long periods and their only chances really came from counter attacks. Although they changed their style of play a little to match us later on – the performance was much improved. I’m full of hope we can take the performance from the second period of this match in to our first matches of the 2010 National League Season this weekend in Middlesbrough”.
