Event: City of Sheffield No Frills Open Meet
Venue: Ponds Forge, Sheffield
Date: 27th to 29th May 2011
A further two Dolphin swimmers made the national grade at the City of Sheffield No Frills Open Meet. Samantha Berry went under the required mark in the 100m butterfly and Alex Chantler-Mayne, despite narrowly missing out on the 1500m freestyle qualifying time, did enough to earn the right to compete in the National Age Group Open Water Championships.
With the meet attracting such a high standard of entry, Dolphin medal places were few and far between. Elizabeth Beckett won gold in the 200m breaststroke with a much improved swim from the recent regional championships and Lauren Matthews swam a lifetime best in the 400m individual medley to also earn a first place finish. Chantler-Mayne’s 1500m freestyle swim gave him a bronze medal as well as setting new age group club records at both the 800m and 1500m events.
Swindon Dolphin’s teaching and coaching programme has now produced eight national qualifiers this season and having developed more swimmers to county, regional and national standard than any other Wiltshire club, this trend looks set to continue.
