Event: Cardiff International Level 1 Open Meet
Venue: Cardiff International Pool
Date: 15th, 16th and 17th June 2012
A squad of 17 Swindon Dolphin swimmers aged 12 to 19 were at the Cardiff International Open Meet for their last chance at a long course meet this season prior to the National Championships.
Competing in her first long course competition, 12 year old Ella Wardale looked particularly impressive as she improved on her short course entry times in six events, and looks to be capable of maintaining this form next season and qualifying in multiple regional events. Also new to the long course pool were Eliza Garrett and Danielle Lewis, both of whom similarly beat their short course times on multiple occasions.
James Clark was looking for a good performance in his 50m freestyle prior to the National Championships in July, and despite not swimming a personal best was pleased with his a bronze medal having qualified for the final as only fifth fastest. Clark picked up a further bronze in the 200m backstroke with his 2:16.09 final swim bringing him agonisingly close to a second national qualifying time of the season.
Dolphin’s girl butterfly swimmers looked impressive as the trio of Victoria Jennings, Lauren Matthews and Samantha Berry all qualified for finals. Jennings put a spirited effort in her final but even a 2.5 second personal best swim was not enough to provide the 16 year old with her first national qualifying time.
Other swimmers making finals over the weekend included Charlotte Gardo, Charlotte Pitts, Mathew Sambrook and Ben Clark.
